A couple of weeks ago Joan and I spent a couple of nights in Glacier National Park and it was fantastic. Our first campsite was at Sprague Creek on the northeast shore of Lake McDonald. This is a smaller campground with just 25 sites. Some sites have lake views but lake access is right there. We lucked out despite getting there about 5pm on a Friday and snagged the last camping spot. After checking out a bit of the Road to the Sun and a short hike, we relaxed on the lake beach to enjoy the sunset.

Hiking Mt Bachelor is a great afternoon of exercise with beautiful views. You can find the hiking trailhead at the parking lot of the sunrise lodge. Despite the trailhead sign being knocked over, the trail is pretty clear if you move along the edge of the parking lot just west of the chair lifts.

You’ll gain about 2,500 feet of elevation for the 2.2-mile trek to the summit. Pick a nice day and you’ll have some cool weather and clear views. After heading back into town, stop at Cascade Lakes Brewery to regain those lost calories.

What a nice way to enjoy a Friday afternoon. Last month we headed out to the trail at Black Butte, just west of Sisters at the end of forest service road 1110. It was sunny and in the mid 70s with a cool breeze. The trail was a bit dusty but the views were terrific.

A fire last year broke the day before Joan and I were going to do this hike. The burn sections are really not that great and certainly don’t diminish the beauty of this hike.

The Black Butte trail is moderate with about 1,600 feet of elevation gain over the two mile route to the top. The top portion is mostly manzanita so expect some sun exposure. The old cupola-style fire lookout (no longer used) makes an area of shade for relaxing at the top. Bring plenty of cold beverage.
